I think they mostly feel overwhelmed and get tired of the constant struggle. They feel stuck in whatever situation they are in and feel there will be no change or resolution so they want out.
Granted, they need help, but so many times there just isn't anyone that wants to spend time with a depressed person, or spend the time trying to figure out what that person is actually feeling or try to understand. Just because a situation doesn't look hopeless to you doesn't mean that they person going through it doesn't totally feel its their only reality or that they have any choices in changing it.

I guess I "looked at death" when I was in a 90-mph head-on-crash. BUT I did not think of it a as a result to solve my problems. The accident gave me a NEW problem; my car was destroyed.

Life is a series of problems, and solutions. The trick is to live a real long time so your solutions are bigger than your problems.

People look at death as a way to solve their problems because death is truly the end. What they don't realize is that it's only the end for them. I don't think they stop and think that taking their own life is only putting their burdens and pain on the people that love them. I always tell myself that as long as God allows me to wake up every morning there are better days ahead. You just have to be strong and wait for the storm to pass. The sun is always behind the clouds.

Because they think, quite logically, that their problems are in this life therefore it would be the best solution to just leave this life. It's a bit like walking away from an argument.
