1) He is a highly intellegent man that created a system that made it easy for home pc users to run home pc's.
2) IBM saw no market for the home pc, and GAVE him full access and full rights to market the operating system DOS which is how the home pc revolution began.
3) This was a gross error in judgement on IBM's part, and capitalized on by a genius with vision of epic proportions.
That's how it began. Once he had the OS and created the market, he licensed out the OS to EVERYONE, another visionary step. This allowed anyone with an idea to make something useful for the home pc user. Either hardware or software. By allowing anyone to create an IBM Clone that could run his software, he opened up the market for the home pc and small buinsess pc. A classic case of "don't mine for the gold, but sell the tools that allow others to do the mining".
Apple on the other hand, kept everything proprietary, meaning, nobody else could make stuff for them. So only Apple could make stuff, or their hand picked and chosen vendors, thus limitiing competion, and thus causing Apple computers to be considerably more then IPM clones (as they were called back in the day).
It's actually quite remarkable that Apple is even in existance day. It is truely a commentary on how good their product is. Everywhere else in history, when a manufacturer tries to keep their technology proprietary, the product dies (like Sony's BetaMax)
Apple's Mac line now seems poised to be the home pc choice of the future. They have the best product by far, their new marketing campaign is amazing, and now their prices are actually competitive.
