I'd like to buy a handgun for hobby/recreation shooting on the weekends (going to a range), but don't have a clue where to start. I've had a little experience over the years, but just basic shooting and safety.
Finally, I'd prefer an automatic, but that's by no means set in stone.

If your just plinking I would get a Walther .22 caliber, if you want a gun that would actually stop something I would look at a Springfield XD9 or XD45. Any 1911 (except Kimber)

with all of the choices there are this is a difficult question to answer but here goes. first decide on a caliber you will be comfortable with based on your physical and hand size. then i would reccommend a colt, ruger, smith & wesson, kimber.
, browning, baretta, or springfield. next, before buying test fire the weapon if possible or see if you can return or exchange if not happy. lastly be sure you get some instruction on the pistol you choose. good luck and good shooting.

Go to a shooting range and rent a few pistols, see which one you're more comfortable with and then make your selection. I own a Shotgun 12 gauge and a 9 mm HK.

Be safe. Don't be a Dick! Chaney that is.

As far as hand guns go, IF you decide on a revolver, get a Smith & Wesson, very reliable, if you want a semi-automatic, get a SIG SAUER, or a GLOCK, the glock is very simple to clean afterwords, and they are all great fire arms.

cant really go wrong with a .45 but if you want an automatic, and since they are legal now, get a M-16 assault rifle.
