my son is 5 & 1/2 months old and if you let him hold your fingers he will stand up quite happily. my friend has said that this is bad for him as he is so young and might get bandybo legs. also if he is sitting on your knee facing you he pushes up as well. any ideas?

Actually it is good for him. My son is 4 1/2 months and my doctor has been doing that at every check up after 3 months to see how strong his legs are. I told my dr. he loved it when my husband and I did that and asked if it was ok and he said it was fine and helped him develop strength in his legs and balance. I asked about exersaucers and Johnny Jump Ups and he said they are fine, the only thing is you need to be careful with the door jam hanging jumpers because a baby can get over active, jump high and kind of run back and forth and the jumper can come off the door jam and the baby will swing over and fall and possibly injure themselves. The only thing he said NO WAY to was Walkers. He said they are dangerous, even if you dont have stairs your kid can get to the oven, the open front or back door, or anywhere else you dont want them, and most front or back doors have a small step in or out, and even that small step can make the baby tip over, also walkers give babies a false sense of security so they can cause the baby to walk later than normal. When the baby is in the walker it doesnt have its legs straight, they are kind of bowed, same with the exersaucer and stuff, but the problem it causes with the walker is that the baby is walking while in this position, so when you put him or her standing up to walk he or she will mimick the way they have been walking in their walker (legs bowed) and fall down. Good Luck

Its not a bad idea at all!! Children are curious and are going to try to get to the next stage as soon as possible. My son has been feeling his feet since her was 8 weeks old and started putting weight on them at around 4 months. Since then he hates sitting on his butt! He's 9 months now and seems to think he can walk! He slides of my knee, onto his fee tthen walks off (me holding his hands of course) then he tries to free his hands, he really seems to think he can do it himself!

Its not bad, its just what babies do - tell ur friend to stop being so paranoid!

Im a trainee maternity nanny and attended a class only a matter of weeks ago that addressed this issue, we were taught not to do this as babies this age are too young to be able to pull themselves up and by letting them hold onto your fingers they are actually placing all the strain on their spines which are not yet developed enough to cope with the weight. It will not effect his legs but will affect his back.

My first son was the same, i used 2 walk him round at 5-6 months with him holding my fingers and it did him no harm, helped him learn 2 walk. when they do this it means they r ready 4 it. my second son is 7months and showing no sign of wanting 2 walk or stand yet.

Has your friend been reading too many baby books instead of seeing babies for what they are, your son is desperate to get going and were is the problem with that, did your friends baby try to walk so quickly, if not maybe she is a little bit peeved cause your son is ahead, enjoy your son and if your not sure ask the midwife or health visitor's, be happy OK.

Tell your friends to stuff it!! Some babies pull up and coast at that age. My daughter loves standing as well, and it is GOOD for them, it strenghtens the muscles in their legs. I think your friends need to read a book or do some research before they start spreading their ignorance!! Don't worry, and PLEASE let your baby grow up, as he is trying to do! When mine started doing that i got them a saucer seat, that way they are supported and safe, but can stand (or sit) without your help and play at the same time. Mine loved it!! Your friends would think my child was really backwards, my youngest could walk with help at 5m!!

My son had bandybo legs but he outgrew them it's natural. My son was cruising at 5 and 1/2 months and walking at age 9 months and his legs straightened out fine.

believe it or not, my little guy did this at 2 months, but I held his shoulders. Now he is 4 months and stands constantly, we have fun letting go of him for a split second and watching him go stiff! My father, God rest his soul, use to complain about my others standing up saying that it would make them bowlegged, and now that he is gone, I guess I will be seeing if he was right. If he was here, i wouldn't be able to tell you that my new baby stands up, my daddy would kick my butt!

It's perfectly fine. He wont get bandybo legs- that is an old wives tale. It actually helps to strengthen his legs to prepare for learning how to stand and walk.

i dont think theres anyhting wrong with it!its good for ur baby,he is starting to exercise those legs muscle.just provide him with some shoes for support as u know their bones is still soft.also dont let ur friends carry or support ur kid by lifting him thru his arms, its bad.he's too young to be carried that way.it may fracture his shoulder bone.the best way still to support is to hold him firmly on his body.my daughter started walking without support at 9 1/2 months.
