The Vedas are themselves collections of texts. Of individual texts, I have never seen an actual number. I suspect there may be thousands. But they are collected in three main groups: the
Rig-Veda, the Brahmanas, and the Upanishads.

actually there was only 1 veda.....collection of texts....

but, the sage vyasa, he is called veda vyasa, entrusted different texts to different schools of philosophy ....and divided them into 4 parts....

the rig veda (oldest)
the yajur veda.
the sama veda and
the adharvana veda.....
