Why do they play so many games?

because unlike other major league sports, it pre-dates television, so to be profitable, they had to fill up the ballparks at least 120 times per year. With television revenues, filling stadiums became a secondary factor in profitability ... hence shorter football, basketball and hockey seasons.
once the precedent was set, the length of the season stuck,

I think the number of games is perfect. From Spring to Fall, it's the greatest of all sports. It has a greater sense of history than any other sport. It's records are revered more than any other sport. When you hear 714, 56, .406, or hear the names, The Splendid Splinter, The Babe, Michael Jack, Lefty, The Mick, you know what the numbers represent and who the names are. Baseball season is right where it needs to be. As a matter of fact the game is so great that not even cheaters like Bonds, McGwire, Sosa and the others can ruin it. Baseball lives on in spite of them.

the more games u play the more it is evident which teams are good, if they played a short season one weaker team could be on a roll and make the playoffs but this way the better teams are more likely to get in.

Because other sports are so wimpy that they can't play 162 games in 200 days. There has to be a show of men in American sports.

because they dont want a season thats 10 games long

because each team has to other teams atleast three times and sometime four. That and they met with that team about 5 or six times a year.
