On the right side of my neck I get sore red spots from shaving, and notice that my hairs lie very flat against the skin on this part of my neck. I've only tried cheap electric shavers, and they've always made the problem much worse, is it worth risking buying an expensive top-of-the range electric shaver, or will it be just as bad?
What are the best razor blades to use to avoid these problems? To avoid razor burn, is it better to shave every day, or to let the skin lie fallow for a few days (and sport a cool Miami Vice style designer stubble!).

I've suffered the same problem. Don't shave every day, but do toughen up the skin, by scrubbing with soap. Shave with a blade, in the bath, take you time, but DON'T GO BACK OVE R THE SAME PATCH OF SKIN. Shave from the eyes down to the chin, then the chin down to the neck. If you want to try electric, get a good Braun, and after a bath or shower, LET YOUR SKIN DRY FULLY. Pat some talc over your face, and then shave with the razor - don't loiter on one spot, work quickly, and don't press hard. Better to leave a little than take too much. Wipe off the talc, and apply an alcohol-based aftershave.
Good luck.

Electric is good if you are just keeping it trimmed down. For a great shave. Do it in the bath when the water is nice and hot (this opens up all the pores in the skin). If not in the bath, steam your face for a while to get the same result.
Use a good shaving cream, although you can use a pre-shave oil prior to putting on the shaving cream which I'm told also helps too.
ALWAYS shave in the direction of the hair growth. Only go against, if you want a really really close shave after doing the first point (shaving with the grain).
Do LONG strokes (none of this short sharp fast cr@p).
And ALWAYS rinse off your tool (razor) after every (or every other) stroke. And above all, ensure that you clean the razor good in clean fresh HOT water afterwards.
Rinse off your face in good warm clean water, (followed by cold to close the pores up) and dry by dabbing your face with a clean soft towel afterwards (no rubbing as you could irritate your skin if you have sensitive skin).
Tone & Moisturise and apply a squirt or two ( to your neck !) of your fav cologe.
Result !!

i find a good electric shaver is better for me although my shave will never be smooth as a baby bottom! the shaver need to be cleaned now and then with a dab of surgical spirit to avoid spreading infections/bacteria. I have thick hairs in beard area so electric shaver is better for me because blades become blunt too easily. I do mine every other day to allow my skin recover properly from the last shave.

I use a Norelco electric razor. the kind with the three rotating blades. It all ways gives me a nice smooth shave every day. you don't need a top of the line shaver. their too expensive. I have had mine for 15 years, I just clean it every once in a while with rubbing alcohol. about every 3 years when it starts to grab me I just replace the blades. do what my dad told me when I started to shave and shave like your trying to shave the fuz off a peach and not break the skin.

Shave every other day whilst in the shower(the heat opens the pores) use gillette turbo and their shaving gel finish off by using shaving balm rather than aftershave. If this doesn't help grow a proper beard at least it will cut down the problem.
