Blog is short for web blog. I reckon it was adapted from the old school .plan files where people would do close to the same thing that some people do in their blogs, which is update everyone on what they're doing and plan to do in the future.
Or, as the person before me said.. it's just a jornal. I don't think theres any right or wrong way to blog, and there are many services available to blog on. I think the most popular in the past have been blogger, livejournal, myspace and Yahoo! 360
