True, everyone knows there is what we call Secret Service but one need not necessarily know who they are and how they operate, and that is where the difference comes. It is something similar to CID (Crime Investigation Detective/Department) in the police force. Everyone knows there are CIDs but one cannot distinguish between a civilian and CID as usually CIDs roam around in disguise. The same applies also to Secret Service or CIA. Hope this clarifies doubts about Secret Service.

Yes, everyone knows about the Secret Service. But you'd be hard pressed to find someone (outside of an administrative office job) that actually did the work for the Secret Service.

also, you may find a secret service office in your local phonebook, but if you visit the address you will find nothing there. It's next to impossible to find one of their offices, what if you had a serious complaint to make? How would you contact them?

Because their actual assignment is secret ...ie: not for public knowledge.
The don't care if you know they exist...just care if you know what they are doing today !
