Because it's their money and they can spend it however they want to, just like no one tells you what you have to do with your money.

What in the world are you talking about? most of the money that charity's get are from celebrity. and if celebrity's didn't attend these things then they wouldn't get that much money probably, because how many celebrity crazed fans give money to the celebrity's charity. Every where you look celebrity's are giving money. look it wheel of fortune. some where just on there and gave there winnings to a charity of there choice. so i think you need to rethink your question. besides when the celebrity go shopping they are supporting the economy, because after they buy something a million teenagers want that shirt or those jeans.

They are greedy just like most of the people in this room. They dont even have the money and its already gone to their heads. Everyone should be charitable. If you cant afford to give money you should donate your time somewhere its needed. For celebreties, they might not have a lot of time, but they have more than enough money to lead an extremely good life and still give a percentage of that wealth to the people who could use a "leg-up".
On a side note, many celebretes DO give to charity, some are even producing movies to persuade the public to act, and pay for the production themselves. Many have lended their faces and finances to start charitable organizations that will be there even after they are dead. I think the new generation of celebs are starting to see a little clearer these days.

Human nature is to always want more - it's the way we're brought up and conditioned. If someone has a 2 bedroom house they want a 3 bedroom one, if they have a 3 bedroom house they want a 4 bedroom one and so on. No matter how far up or down the ladder of financial success a person is they always believe those higher up should be doing more to help those lower down.
But as a person moves up and down the ladder the duty to be charitable always rests with those higher up, even if someone is near the top of the ladder they will still see it as the duty of those higher up to be charitable.
An interesting point is that a large number of people state that if they win the lottery they will donate much of the money to charity, the reality is very differernt with only a tiny number of lottery winners ever actually doing so. The reason for this is primarily because people have a very high opinion of themselves - for example, 70% of people say they would assist a stranger if he/she collapsed in the street but in reality less than 2% do.
Another factor is that of perspective. A couple of weeks ago I was in one of the poorest countries in the world (Burkina Faso) where they could justifyably question the ethics of you or me having an expensive computer when they can't afford to feed themselves. They could easily ask of you or me, the same question that you are asking of rich celebrities - to their eyes you and me are rich and we are just as morally and ethically responsible for providing charitable assistance as we perceive rich celebrities to be.
It's a bit garbled but I hope it makes sense.

don't tell me that if you had a good chunk of money that you wouldn't buy yourself, family and friends something really nice. most celebrities do donate some of their money...it's a huge tax break!!! some people just don't flaunt to the whole world that they are helping other people, it's called being humble

They have to maintain an image. And to maintain an image, they have to have the right props. And to have the right props, they have to spend lots of money. However, there are some celebrities who use their wealth and fame to promote their favorite causes. Why do you think so many conservatives complain about "liberal Hollywood"?

Most celebs do donate tremendous sums of money to various charities.
Most celebs also do not pay for very much (they get a lot of freebies).

I think that's generalizing a bit, but I have wondered that too. I think it's because Hollywood has some pretty screwed up priorities...everyone is always trying to impress everyone else.

Not to any individual... though we owe $10K towards a loan for a bulldozer (we'll have that paid off by October).
