DO NOT use insecticides as hummers are delicate birds... take a small dixie cup and poke a teency hole in it and run the string that your feeder hangs from through the hole so that the cup sits upside down above the feeder. Smear some vaseline inside the cup and the ants won't be able to get to the nectar.

Wrap a vaseline coated cloth around the hanger leading up to the hook from the feeder. The ants will get stuck on the cloth and won't be able to get down to the feeder. Eventually, they will give up and go away.

If the feeder is out on a hook, you can smear petroleum jelly all over the hook and the cord. Another thing to try is vegetable oil. It is less goopy and you can put some in a small spray bottle to reapply when needed. Do not use ant spray as birds are highly sensitive to chemicals.

You can buy a product called Tanglefoot....you put some on the hook that your hummingbird feeder is on, ants cannot cross it, they stick to it. It is a little hard to find, my sis in law gave me some, had got it at a hardware. It works great...don't get on your fingers and don't put where birds will light! I put on a big hanging hook and a bird gots it wing caught!! Finally got loose!!

I hung mine from my carport overhang. I think the ants are more likely to come if you hang the feeder from something that's stuck in the ground like a shepherds hook. That's just my experience.
If you don't have any other options, maybe you could smear Vaseline or something like that at the base of whatever they are climbing up and they'll get stuck.

Mix some boric acid with sugar, and place it under the feeder, or near the ant holes and they will carry it back to the nest and die.
Or, get some diazanon plus, by ORTHO, and it will "kill everything in site that lives! Its a concentrate and will make about 60 gallons, and it comes in a green bottle at your hardware store---> its so powerful, it will kill termites!
I wish you well..

Its tough, but, you should clean the area around and below the feeder with water on a daily basis. I mean, think about it. The feeder is filled with liquid sugar water. That's like hanging a bag of crack there for them.

Try smearing some petroleum jelly around the hook or on the string that you use to hang it. They still find the feeder, but get stuck in the jelly. Not very pretty...but it works.
