On October 13, 1960, Mr. Khrushchev caused an uproar when he removed and brandished a light brown loafer after the Philippine delegate accused the USSR of imperialism in Eastern Europe.

Either the shoe, or the heel of his hand, slammed the desk in front of him.

Khrushchev was removed from power in 1964 and his name wasn't mentioned in official USSR communications for decades after. The shoe incident remains an embarrassment to his family to this day.

Note: Khrushchev made the statement "History is on our side. We will bury you!" on November 17, 1956 at a Kremlin reception for Western diplomats. He later clarified that he had meant to say, "We will outlive you," but the transator was too literal in rendering a Russian phrase, which ended up sounding frightening to Western ears in the midst of the Cold War.

No he did not. He did take his shoe off once and used it to hammer on his table in order to draw attention to himself. This did happen during a meeting of the General Assembly of the UN. The resolution discussed was a Russian one and was about colonialism.

I thought he banged his shoe on the podiumd and said something like "we will bury you". It was in reference to capitalism, but I think could have been interpreted different ways.
