Because many leaders become more concerned about having the status that good fire-power can bring and worry little about helping the common man. It's greed, pure and simple.

If there was no evil in the world then weapons and destruction would not be necessary. That said sadly it would be the cultural equivalent of you minding your own business and your neighbor takes a liking to your house. Then proceeds to kick you and your family out of it simply because he can. He's big , bad and armed. But if he knew that you could defend yourself and possibly kill him if he tried to take over your house , then he would probably reconsider. It still could happen but would be alot less likely. By projecting a position of power a country can help ensure its freedom from oppresion or takeover by another. Until the day comes when we can all be on the same page as far as not wanting to conquer or anniahlate each other for our differences the weapons and war will always exist.

There's nothing to think about. Countries (especially constitutional democracies) must buy so many weapons because otherwise the tyrannical regimes will dominate the world with their own. You think people are starving now, just wait until the good guys can't defend themselves because they gave up the weapons that the tryants would not. I'd rather have peace than war, but would rather have a grip on reality than idealistic thought that would see the world lose human rights
