Depends on your grass type and the weather conditions. As hot and dry as it's been lately, we cut less than an inch when we cut, so that we don't traumatize the lawn. The best length to KEEP your grass would depend on the type you have planted...ie: bermuda is thicker and lusher, and can be kept cut closer. ( We're in upstate, btw)

In the hot time of the year grass should stay at 3-3/12 inches and you should never cut off more than 1 inch at a time

It depends on the type of grass. Here in Florida we have a lot of St augustine grass and its best if you cut it at 3.5 inches. If you cut too low you damage the grass and it will die.
