The town I live in, and neighboring towns, are predominantly inhabited by white people. The college that I go to is the same--if there is anyone there who is not white, I don't see them. So, what is a girl to do?

Well, first of all, don't sweat it. There are plenty of people who are going to harp on you as being bred a racist, but it's just not the case.
I was raised in an ALL white community. The first black kids to ever go through our school system were a few grades behind me. And I didn't become any more racist than anyone else. Not only that, my community wasn't all that particularly racist either. (I grew up in Ohio farm country). As a matter of fact.....I really only began to meet RABID racists when I went to college. The really awful racists I met came from wealthy suburbs of large cities. Us kids that were raised in the absence of other races were a bit puzzled as to why these spoiled rich kids hated people of color so much.
What you DO lack is the exposure to other races and cultures, so you are missing out on some opportunities. But let me warn you....... I was pretty accepting of everything I ran into with people of color, and that had some pretty bad consequences for me because I was a bit eager to be open-minded. There are good people and there are bad people. There are good white people and there are bad white people. I already knew that. But there are good people of color and there are bad people of color. People are people. Good and bad. Just don't be in a rush to be so accepting that you let your guard down and let yourself be taken advantage of like I did.

What is a girl to do? Well, keep an open mind and experience things for yourself. All individuals are called individuals because they are just that...an individual. No two are exactly alike. Sally may think that John is a jerk and be very vocal about it...but are you going to take Sally's word for it? Maybe Sally is a thief and John exposed that part of her life.

I guess what I'm saying is that you should be very careful when letting other people's opinion influence your own. Experience your life for yourself so that you have your own opinions.

So I live in a city where its very diverse. With people from all around the world. Many of them are great people. I don't have to choose to respect them but I do. They are contributing members of society. People who work hard and do the right thing.

I can also choose not to respect someone who because of her surroundings fails to understand why she could even bare to bother only because thats the popular view around her.

Whats a guy to do?

i've learn that, in some instances, subdivisions and other residence areas are developed as to accomodate people of certain color without us even knowing...well maybe we do know and just try to ignore the fact.

so if u dont see anyone different from you, its not your fault. All i can sudgest is to keep an open-mind.

by telling you that, i should listen to myself say that too...lol.

you have a brain use it . treat people the way you would want to be treated. you know enough to trust your judgement on who you like to have as a white friend so why do you not trust yourelf to make your own judgement on other races. please dont let others make that judgement for you. there is good and bad in all races . so just remember to give people a chance. and trust your heart and own mind.

It is called thinking for yourself and forming your own opinions. Everyone has the capability to do so. Alot of people let others influence their thinking. People are people regardless of skin color. What would you do if you were blind? Would color matter to you then?
