We feel guilty because we don't want to face the possibility that we may not be the "good" person we think we are.

Guilt is something you feel when you know that you have gone against the norms of Humanity, norms of law or most importantly the norms of values you respect.
Some people can kill in the name of anything and still not feel guilty about it because in their mind, valuing another's life is not a norm or have been taught other wise.
It is a very uneasy feeling - the only way to get rid of it is to live by the socially acceptable norms :)

When we were being brought up our parents taught us that certain things aren't allowed because they are wrong. If you hit someone, it is wrong. Our parents made us say we are sorry. If you forgot something that was important to someone, our parents made us do it to help the other person feel better. Our parents taught us guilt. We feel guilty whenever we have done something wrong. Guilt is a good trait. It helps us correct our mistakes.

because we've gone against what our views and values are...guilt is a reminder to keep ourselves in check, to keep on track and inline with what we value most in ourselves.
