I saw the very first video on MTV in 1981. It was so cool that there had never been a channel like that. When commercials came on they were muted until the music came back on. There were no reality shows or any shows, it was just music videos 24 hours a day. I miss that.

I remember and I miss it. I HATE anything associated with the word reality tv. I miss the art and craft of music videos. Even though MTV will always appeal to the younger generation, as each generation moves up, I grew up on it and I miss the old MTV. I am 27 and was born in 1979. When I was a child, my 1st favorite video was Sammy Hagar's, I can't drive 55. I been there for Michael Jackson's Thriller, I seen the birth of the Seattle music scene. I remember Cobain on Unplugged. I remember when MTV was the 1st to interview Snoop Dogg when he got out of that murder trial. I remember Beavis & Butthead,Liquid TV and Tom Green. As a child I remember watching more MTV than Saturday morning cartoons. The last great MTV show in my opinion was Jackass. Everytime I channel surf through MTV, I always see some reality tv on some snooty rich kids that live by a beach. I miss the old days. Nothing against hiphop, but it seems like they only play hip hop videos and no rock. Maybe I am an old fart. VHI to me for the last few years is the new MTV. I remember growing up how I used to scoff at VHI and only watch MTV. Now days, MTV leaves me no choice. I agree with you and I want it back to the old.

1. The internet. I dont think there is a strong desire for people to sit and watch videos anymore. If you want to see your favorite group's video - you can download it and watch it whenever you want. Although, I think they should definitely devote more time to showing videos.
2. Sex sells. All they do is make these 'reality shows' that puts horned up 20 somethings together and then let the fun begin.
3. Video games. Since the Playstation, young adults get more entertainment from video games than watching music videos...I think the execs at MTV realize this and have to put on more interesting programming.
Just my opinion...

It wouldn't do much getting MTV back to how it was. It already shows the same 25 videos for 4 hours straight, so putting those videos on ALL day won't make a difference. I hate the shows on MTV, but it happens--and apparently, the station wasn't making enough money with the nonstop videos, so they 'were in it for the money'.

I remember mtv at its best. Pat Benetar singing "Love is a battlefield" and remembering seeing Madonna and everyone dressing like her. It's not just that mtv changed its venue the music is not the same. I don't know about you but the last thing I want to see is my daughter dressing like these yong pop stars today. As far as watching now my husband flipsto it every now and again and it is pure crap. What ever happened to the good old days.

I miss the original MTV too. The video's were non-stop and there was a lot of background info on the bands and singers. Now it's just reality crap. They need to get back to what M.T.V. stands for MUSIC tv.

I miss it to. But then again I think the quality of the music videos has taken a major dive. Either the genre has gotten old, or if you can't play it on MTV, why spend the extra money and effort?

When I lived in Europe they had a few stations that were MTVish including MTV and everyone was actually about music (including MTV). It was much better and I think their taste in music was better because of it.
I really miss that.

Don't forget Beavis and Butthead. Even though that wasn't music it spoke to a whole generation of young people in a way that no other show had ever done before. Now they have aboninations like Cribs and Room Raiders that obviously appeal to the fake-tan, lower-back-tatoo crowd of trashy teenagers and twenty-somethings.

MTV is now reality tv with a mix of BET thrown in. It sucks. MTV2 came out with this new concept, to play music, but it is starting to suck as well.
