So what does that say about all our other networks and newspapers. Are they recognizably American? I never thought of it that way but actually I have to agree with her. CBS doesn't look very American to me. What do you think?

Depends how you define American. I thought American represented the ideals of freedom, democracy, and open debate to name a few. It seems to me that FOX News does not condone any of that. To me, they talk about being free within the confines of doing and believing whatever the president or the GOP want because it is "war time" and therefore we should be happy to give up some of our freedoms. I think you have to be worried when, in "war time" your government expects you to remain silent about direct criticism of them as war time is a very critical period and should be a heightened time of criticism and debate. Now, when I say criticism I don't mean bashing, I mean being constructive. I really don't think any of the news channels currently provide non-biased information to the public, which I find very sad. I watch BBC America and read outside news sources to find out what the debate is within our own political structure because it is not reported to me here. When I talk on the phone to my friends or family they worry about criticising the government for fear they are being monitored but FOX News condones what the government has decided to do as far as NSA monitoring programs are concerned and then touted those "terrorists" from CHicago as proof that it is working, when really they weren't terrorists at all but extremist crazy Americans that didn't even have a real plan but were just spouting things off that really didn't mean anything, which I'm sure a lot of people do sometimes. Of course, it didn't hurt that they were a bunch of black men either. Anyway, my point is that every news station is American simply because it is in America and they are obviously giving some kind of opinion, which they have a right to do. My fear is when News becomes sensationalist to promote government agenda it helps fuel the facist conspiracy theories out there. Ann Coulter needs to learn to listen and debate rather than scoul at the opinions of others as if she has nothing left to learn in life.

Nice speech Ron O, glad to see you kept your own political agenda well hidden (lol). Throwing Howard Stern into the conservative mix was a nice touch.

Re Ann Coulter's comments: Let's face it, regardless of the lip service spewed by any given network, the politics of the nation is centrist in nature. Most people have both conservative and liberal thought, with the degree of either of these thought patterns determining the individuals politics. Basically, as a group, we don't like to rock the boat, at least not much.

Unfortunately, being somewhat conservative or liberal has no shock value, and does not sell air time. Obviously the networks recognize this and that's where the shock value comes in. News programs are a business, and the primary objective for any business is to sell. So whether your political bias leans to the left towards CNN, or to the right towards FOX, it doesn't really matter... pick your poison. Unfortunately though, both of their programing is divisive in nature. Always question their agendas, and think for yourself.

Perhaps they don't look american because they are the propagando organ of the democratic party. Have been and still are.. Have been caught doing some pretty drastic things too. Besides, Ann Coulter does not work for Fox. Or, with Fox. She is a guest, just as she is when she appears on other network channels.

I think Ann Coulter is just another 'shouting head' that Fox News hires for shock value and sensationalism. Fox News is not a "news" channel - and it's certainly not 'recognizably American'. It's owned by an Australian, and is nothing more than a repugnant propaganda machine for the Republican Party in America.
I don't know why CBS doesn't look "recognizably American" to you; perhaps it's because their news readers don't shout and scream like raving lunatics. Maybe America has degenerated into a rude, boisterous, crude, banal society that has no manner of civility anymore.
Unfortunately, what it 'says' about all other networks and newspapers is that the proud tradition of America's Fourth Estate has deteriorated into a cowardly group of bozos unable and unwilling to follow in the proud profession of journalism. The networks and newspapers are now run by bean counters, who only look at the bottom line instead of the integrity and veracity of what they should be doing: offering objectivity and balance to the news.
Insipid entertainers such as Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity, Howard Stern, and other loudmouths have twisted the meaning of "free speech" into an evil license to say whatever they want to say without regard for others' opinions or without any need to be truthful, accurate, fair, or accountable. These cretins reign over the airwaves, plundering networks' budgets while networks allocate very little funding for honest, in-depth news coverage or faithful reporting.
So the loudmouths laugh all the way to the bank as they turn America into a society of blathering idiots who can't think for themselves or form an independent opinion.
Until networks and newspapers are once again independently owned and operated, instead of being controlled by mega-rich conglomerates who don't give a damn about anything but pure profit, you will see very little "recognizably American" reportage of the news. You'll only see, read, and hear the propaganda that the conservative right-wing news media chooses to spoon-feed into our little-used brains. Today's media smacks directly of the kind of propoganda Hitler used in his attempt to brainwash his own countrymen into accepting as "truth", which - if you might recall from your history book - ultimately caused the deaths of over six millions human beings.
Surely Satan has a special corner of Hell reserved for the evil Tasmanian devils that pass themselves off as commentators, journalists, and reporters. Coulter, Limbaugh, Stern, Hannity and all the other sub-human grubs that infest the media should deserve an eternity in Hell with their co-conspirators George Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, and all 535 members of the most evil, incompetent, corrupt, cowardly U.S. Congress ever to occupy Capitol Hill.

Ask the former mayor of Cincinnati, Jerry Springer! Who is going to pay for bland realism? Who will buy products seen?
Where will these products be seen? - on the Jerry Show!! Or FOX, etc. It's all dollar driven - it's the "bottom line"! Sensationalism sells!!
