Philosophers and mystics had to posit deity or a "first cause" to solve this problem. They weren't caught up in the whole time/physical conception of things, and needed a cause for thoughts and BEING (i.e. a first cause for meaning rather than matter) without assuming that thoughts are "just energy". The only force that could cause nothing to be something is theoretically God. There is no explanation for motion without explaining creation itself.
Many scientifically minded people believe that there really is no explanation; we can explain the things we perceive, but not the things we do not perceive. Maybe we just forget that energy continues. Maybe Brownian motion is an illusion. That's the kind of thinking that develops when we take a hard look at empiricism or neo-empiricism. They are stuck believing that science is sufficient. The truth is it doesn't give us much of an idea of life. It fills up space in our brains but doesn't give much of an answer.
Scientifically speaking absolute stillness is as improbable as absolute motion. Stillness is really relative to whether the things (atoms, stars, people) nearby are moving. I would say that we have a tendancy not to perceive stillness because it is less interesting. Also, it cannot be determined whether a uniform volume without articulation is moving unless it gives off energy that we interpret as a kind of motion.
My own personal explanation is that some things in the universe have value, and are worth financing. Those things persist, and are allowed to move. Other things have value in preventing things from moving or mixing, and those things stay still. Generally we pay attention to the things that move.

Scientists are divided over whether the universe will continue to expand outwards (known as Hubble expansion) as it has since the "big bang". As a few people have mentioned, there needs to be a force applied to the matter in space to make it slow or stop. As the matter in the universe is expanding outwards from a central point, gravity would tend to slow any expansion. However, measurements carried out in 1998 suggest that the expansion of the universe is actually accelerating.

The movement of Universe doesn't mean that the Universe itself is moving . But it mean that all thing inside that great universe is moving . Our god created everything in the universe moving because this movement changes alot of the Universe's feartures so that the man cannot know every thing quickly . Without this movement , there will be no night or no day . there will be no eclipse which make us study the outer space . the Universe will be moving till the end of the world which only God who know its time .

The universe had a starting and can have an finish. It's been scientifically demonstrated. It is managed by way of house time. God created the universe and the measurement time so therefor God can exist external of time and haven't any starting or finish. To reply your query approximately the rock...... God can create a rock of endless dimension and nonetheless be equipped to transport it.

Its simple. As long as something is moving, it won't stop unless acted on by a force. Since the universe is mostly space and nothing much else, for some reason it started moving, but it needs a force to stop it, and that force is not there.
So it's always moving.

many theories suggest that the univers is is motion and will remain in motion for many more years to come .
however many theories are also against this fact
there is no way to know unless more accurate devices are manufactured and used
the most relieble theory and the most famous one is the big bang theory and i suppose you know about it . according to that theory , yes the universe is in motion and will remain in this state for many many more years
will the universe come to a stand still?
maybe, maybe not
it will depend on the activities taking place in the future .

THE UNIVERSE HAS GROWN OUTTA A BIG BANG AND HENCE ALL THE MASS MATERIAL IS IN MOTION SINCE ITS BIRTH...AND ACCORDING NEWTONS LAWS ... IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE IN MOTION TILL SOME EXTERNAL FORCE ACTS ON IT...AS ALL THE MATERIAL COMPOSING THE UNIVERSE IS MOVING , THE UNIVERSE ON THE WHOLE IS MOVING....

Everything in the universe is in motion, the earth, the planets, galaxies probably because of kinetic energy.

i think the universe is always in motion to try and keep the humans from sitting on their caboodles expecting the world to revolve around them.

You know what molecules are, right? Think of molecules as tiny little complete universes, and go from there. Mind-boggling, isn't it!
