They started using female names in 1953 to replace the previous method of naming them using the phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie...). Due to pressure from feminist groups in the 1970s, they started naming them alternating male/female names. Names are used instead of the phonetic alphabet because it has been found that using an identifiable name raises awareness amongst the general populace.

Well it use to be that all hurricans and major storms were named after females. Mostly because it was a man's world and they decided that was the way to name them. But that was when they first started being able to tell when one was coming. Before then it was like the Great Storm of 1939, or the New York Storm of 1888 and the like.

Cyclones had female names before, but now both genders are used ... Tornadoes don't have names as such... as they're unpredictable ... Perhaps that's a good reason why they should have women's names ...(Only joking !!!!!)

generally, female change their minds (even temper) often than men do...or you really cannot predict when a female will blow her top off...but, in some countries, they name their tornadoes, cyclones, typhoons based on male's names...here in the philippines, we name them based on female's names...if i'm not mistaken, in the U.S.A., they name them based on male's names.
