He didn't blame the end of their era on economics, he blamed it on bad government.

The USSR was. They didn't have a very strong economy to begin with, but they took what they had and put it towards their military might. The were going to keep up with the US or surpass it. They went broke. Many of their Military members to this day have problems getting a paycheck.

Ronald Regan brought about the down fall of the Iron Curtain. He simply outspent the USSR. Their government chose to spend all their money keeping up with the US and it caused an economic crisis they couldn't recover from.

Their military industrial complex was draining too much capital, there was not enough investment in new production capacity. They did it themselves, their economy could have survived based on GNP, but they misdirected the surplus from generating more surplus into an economic black hole--military spending. Just like the US is doing now.
