Well, I read the book about the story that inspired the Exorcist writer, Blatty. The truth behind the events that made him write that book are very frightening on many levels, particularly to an atheist like me!
If you get the chance read up on it, there is tons of stuff on the Internet about it so I won't burden you with links.
I also thought Carlotta Moran's experiences that were later turned into the Entity were very frightening too, but I am not sure how much I believe. Not that I am disbelieving her but I would like to read what the investigators who were helping her thought.

I've never actually read anything that scared me, but there is this Japanese film called "Ghost Actress" that scared me to the point of paranoia for about a week. Nothing else I've come across can do that to me.

Its not the scariest....but it's bloody funny though!!
When my father was a probationary police constable....he had to deal with a sudden death. Unknown to him..it was a wind up!! Another police officer had gone to the mortuary and was lying on the slab in the fridge with a blanket over him....and my father had to go with his tutor constable to the mortuary on the pretext of tagging the body with an identity tag. Anyway...the tutor constable pulled out the "dead body....and then immediately made an excuse to leave the room...leaving my father alone with the "body". Then.....the "body" under the blanket sat up right and began making "ghost noises".....my father....shitting himself ( a figure of speech I hope!!!) got out his wooden truncheon and started beating the "body" about the head!! The "ghost noises" turned to ARGHHH OUCH...OOOO noises......but by then my father was running out of the door!! Needles to say....they didn't play that joke for a while...as the poor cop under the blanket was nursing multiple bumps to his head!!!!!

Deckchair trapped testicles
A Croatian man got a nasty surprise when he tried to get out of his deck chair and found his testicles had got stuck.
Mario Visnjic had gone swimming naked in the sea at the Valalta beach in western Croatia, reports 24sata.
His testicles had shrunk while in the cool sea and slipped through the wooden slats when he sat back down on his wooden deckchair.
But as he lay in the sun they expanded back to normal size and got stuck between the slats.
He was eventually freed after he called beach maintenance services on his mobile phone and they sent a member of staff to cut the deck chair in half.
