Ignore alot of the previous answers. I'll give you the real reasons.
There are alot of gators in Florida. Roughly 1 million to be precise. However, they remain in bodies of FRESH water, as they cannot live for long periods in SALT water. Most of the fresh water lakes, ponds, and rivers are on the interior of the state. While most of the population lives along the coastal areas.
Furthermore, gators are NORMALLY quite fearful of humans, even the larger ones. USUALLY, the only time you hear of an attack is when a gator has learned NOT to be afraid of humans (this is almost always because people have been feeding the gators or keeping them as pets).
Occasionally, they'll attack someone if they are angry from being overly bothered or cornered. And, of course, they'll attack if they are large gators, exceptionally hungry, and see you as an easy target (usually children or people of small stature).
The funny thing is, you hear of less than a dozen attacks each year. You're FAR more likely to hear of an attack by a dog than from a gator, snake, or shark.
As for the reasons for moving here............that's easy.
- Warm weather, especially along the coastal areas.
- Some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S., especially on the Gulf Coast.
- Low unemployment rate, and plenty of jobs.
- Lower cost of living (low prices for food and items, relatively low taxes and NO State Income tax)
- Relatively cheap land compared to the Northeast, the West, and parts of the Midwest.
- Never a lack of things to do (applies to the Metro Areas in the State).
Hope this answers your questions!

I live in central Florida. Right on the St. Johns river. Yes there are a lot of gators this year. But they are in the river.!!!!! Yes there has been a lot of attacks this year too. One right down the road from me last week. A 16 year old boy was standing on the river bank with his feet in the water at 1 am, and throwing rocks at it. Yeah! The gator came after him! If someone was throwing rocks at you, would you attack? Don't swim in RIVER!! Gator's will eat you. Tourist come into town and they don't believe you when you tell them not to dangle their feet in the water. They laugh, and think we are messing with them. People, This is Florida! We've had gators here forever! But I do believe they need to open trapping season soon. They are over populated at the moment. But, as far as living in Florida. I love it. I was born in New England, but Florida is great!~

Geez, alligators are certainly not the worst thing in Florida. Look at who they have as Governor, and then there's Katherine Harris. Then there's hurricanes and the terrible heat and the bugs, and the elderly drivers.
Alligators would be WAY down my list of worries.

Here in the Midwest we use dogs to watch over our house and personal items.
In Florida they just find a gator in the neighbors yard and train it to be their "guard Gator"
That is why everyone wants to move there, free home security system.
