in our dna aproximately 1.8 % differs from a chimp, which is our closest reative. However, current thinking is that we shared an ancestor, rather than developed directly from an ape itself. Even though the Darwinian scale of man, you know the one, apes slowly standing up and becoming more recogniseable as a modern man, is a very simple view of the process. Think more of a tree with multiple branches, each representing the different avenues, most of them deadends, with Homo Sapiens at the top.
And we still like to show our butts..........

Neither of those things has ever been proposed by science, obviously you weren't paying attention. It is a fact that monkeys and humans evolved from a common ancestor, not from each other. I am baffled as to why people have such a hard time with this! I think Kansas must take much of the blame for so many people being so confused!
Dalmations and Great Danes are both descended (by deliberate selection rather than natural selection) from a "yellow dog", a sort of prototypical original domesticated canine that first hooked up with humans a looong time ago, right? But you wouldn't ask "are we sure Dalmations evolved from Great Danes, or could it be the other way around?", would you?

The apes would tell you that it's the other way around!
In fact, we're cousins. Both lines evolved from a common ancestor several million years ago. They went their way. We went ours.
There's all kinds of evidence to demonstrate it:
- the obvious similarity of appearance
- our common features, like hands and feet
- the fossil record, which shows into the past how the apes and we seem to converge in our features
- the genetic record, which shows how remarkably much we have in common
If someone could suggest an alternative explanation, he'd be hard pressed to explain all of these and other similarities without a common ancestor. How would you explain how you resemble your cousins except by a common grandparent?

It's neither.
Humans, apes and monkeys all evolved from a common ancestor. How do we know? There's plenty of fossil evidence that shows the steps in the process. Do a little on-line research or check out a book from your library to see the visuals.
Oh, BTW, we share over 99% of our DNA with chimpanzees.

Because of archaeology. We know we evolved from Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, the Australopithecus, etc. We can trace our lineage back until we were most certainly apes. We share a common ancestor with things like Chimps and todays other Great apes, that common ancestor was, itself, an ape, but not an ape that still lives today.
Anyway, we are still apes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominoidea

evolving into an ape would be a step backwards from what we are now and also a loss in our Intelligence. Let alone having to deal with lice on a regular basics.

We are actually more linked genetically to bush babies (the cute furry things with the Huge eyes!). Apes of all different species have been evolving along side us, evolution is about adapting to environment after all. We have common ancestors.

According to the theory of Darwin, we are the descendants of ape. With observation u will see that man has in fact many particulairites with ape. The remarkable difference is that their brain is smaller than ours and we got the gift of developing our brain n memory
