Because people type quickly on here. I'm a touch-typist and even in this modern age, it enables me to communicate more effectively, I think. I hate mobile phone text-speak as well. It's lazy and disrespectful. If someone's worth talking (writing) to, they deserve properly constructed language. I guess this makes me an old fart!

The shift key seems to be used less and less, especially since instant messaging, and like the previous person said, Text messaging. I actually try to keep everything proper with punctuation and using capitol letters where they are supposed to be placed. I am 22 so it's not just an "old fart" thing. :)

On most modern keyboards, companies have given an option of "Ignorant" or "Normal." Unfortunately, a majority of users are incapable of seeing this "Normal" setting, and thus have their shift, period, semi colon, and comma keys completely beyond repair.
Sad, I know.

'cause they are not perfectionist like you and me and they are not bothered with formalities as long as they can make themselves understood, specially when they are at work sneaking into yahoo answers whilst boss is looking the other way or gone to get a cuppa.

Thanks for noticing.
I've had problems with my Laptop keyboard for the last few weeks. I took it off and gave it a good blow out and it seems to be better now - mostly!

They work. People just don't use them or become lazy and don't want to use them.
