Its all down to evolution- they evolved to have wings so that they could fly over long distances and search for food quicker.

First of all God specialized them for travel to search for food and communication before man was produced. Secondly birds fly because their legs are jointed to do so and light in weight to fly. They lack the ability to walk long distances.

Millions of years ago, a group of therapod dinosaurs developed modified scales,(feathers) probably not for flight initially, but for body insulation. As time progressed, these feathers became longer on the arms and tail, enabling the "proto- bird" to glide. (e.g. Archaeopterix) The skeleton itself became lighter, and bones became hollow, the breastbone became "keeled" for the attachement of stronger flight muscles, and an air sac developed in the birds abdomen. Thus the birds had truly evolved . Just to turn your question "on its head" some birds became runners again not fliers, the wings became reduced (e.g. Ostrich) .
