Go door to door hanging plastic bags on doorknobs, with your menu inside and some coupons for free egg roll to new customers. You can buy the plastic bags cheap, by the thousand. But there is more to it than just that. First, create a relationship with a printing shop, a shop that will give you a discount for bringing them new business. Then go visit some non-restaurant businesses in your area and offer to print and distribute their literature, cheap. That way are making some money for the time you take hanging these bags on doors. Include in the bag offering to carry advertising for yard sales, baby sitters, etc in the next month's flyer.

Don't expect results the first month or two -- people can get coupons on their doors for 3, 4, even 6 months before they say "Let's try that new Chinese place."

(Hint: The bags are important. If you just fold the paper and stick it in the door, it makes litter and you will held responsible. If you use other means, like tape, people will come after you for damaging their door.)

Besides advertising in your local newspaper, have an employee stand on the main road near the lane you mentioned with a sign pointing to your restaurant. You could also offer 25% discount to college students on Wednesdays with a valid ID. And perhaps give permanent %15 discounts to senior citizens on a permanent basis. And, if you have regular customers, provide them with a loyal customer card, and perhaps once a month they could receive a free meal up to $10. Or, how about giving out a punch card, and after every 10 meals, the customer gets a free drink with their next order, or free fried rice. If there are local colleges nearby, post flyers in their weekly newspapers, or post around campus. Good luck!

Because it's not on the main road, I suggest that you place a sign outside the lane with an arrow to let people know your restauarnt is located there and print some menus with a map on it and distribute them in people's mailboxes.
