Mauna Loa from base (under the sea) to top (above it) is bigger than everest - and is also the world's tallest volcano! If you think this is right, you're actually mistaken - highest means above sea level so everest IS actually the highest, even if Mauna Loa is the tallest.

I think maybe you're trick question tricked you :P

The highest mountain in the world is not Everest, it is Chimborazo in Ecuador. Everest is the highest above sea level, true, but Chimborazo, at only 20,700 feet (6,310m) is the furthest from the centre of the earth by some 2150m. That makes it the highest mountain (assuming you want to define height that way).

Mountains are generally measured from sea level, in which case Mount Everest (29,028 feet; 8,848 meters) is king

Hawaii's Mauna Kea, though, rises an astonishing 33,476 feet (10,203 meters) from the depths of the Pacific Ocean floor. Measuring from base to peak, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on earth."
