Because it is. Every arguement someone can make against rap music not being music can be said about the hardcore heavy metal.

They claim that rap isn't music because there isn't any singing. In the death metal music and other sub-genres of metal they growl out their lyrics.

They claim that rap music is just computer beats and has no "real" music to it. But in some metal sub-genres you have the drummer just wailing on his drum kit and the guitar/bass being so distorted that the melody is lost within all the "chunka-chunka-chunka" guitar riffs.

They claim that rap music is all about sex, money, and talking about how cool they are and how their music is meaningfull. Well, not every heavy metal song is a meaningfull one just like not every rap song is about sex and money. In fact, quite a few rap songs are meaningfull and try to show how messed up the world is. Like Tupac's "Brenda's Having a Baby" or Eminem's "Mosh" or countless other examples.

Don't take this as I'm trying to say that one genre is better than the other because I'm not. I realize that certain music isn't for everyone. But that's what music is about. It's about connecting with an individual...it's not about connecting with every human being everywhere. So, just because you don't like it (or are so prejudicial that you won't even give it a chance) doesn't mean you should say a genre of music isn't music.

And I speak this from a personal experience. There was a time in my life that I thought that Rap music was "cRap" music. I thought that heavy metal music was just so superior to all other genres. Yeah, there were a few other bad@sses in other genres. I thought that Run-DMC was pretty cool and the Beastie Boys were pretty tight. I thought a couple country artists were cool. But for the most part I thought rap, country, techno, and other genres were junk. Then I grew up. I opened my mind and I gave artists a chance to express themselves without the predetermined notion that it's going to suck. And that's when I realized that Tupac was just as good of an artist as Pantera or that George Strait was like the Ozzy Osbourne of country music (both are considered gods in their respective genres).
