Because rats (not usually mice) have a lot of the same DNA as humans (something like 90%), they're easy to breed, easy to study, easy to look after and are quite small - and everyone else does research on them, so lots is known about them.

both mice and pigs are very similar genetically to humans.

Because the mouse can interbreed and can produce a very large colony in a very short period of time...... they grow very fast and also very much suitable for testing......
