I'm doing research for academia, not for a company. I'm studying catalysis in organic synthesis. Although my job supposedly benefits everyone, since my group is developing techniques that will eventually make pharmaceutical drug production much cheaper and safer, I think "eventually" is the key word.

Collectively, chemists can make the world a better place. However, so much research by hundreds of people, over years, is needed to create just one drug that I don't feel that I personally make much of an impact. Personally, I entered chemistry because I wanted to help develop drugs, but from my experience, I think many of us choose to do chemistry for the love of it, rather than to make the world a better place.
