Most states do not have 12 person juries.

12 people are always on juries. For a guilty verdict, ALL 12 persons must say you are guilty. If even one person thinks you are innocent, that's called a "hung jury" and you're off the hook unless there's an appeal.

In felony criminal cases in California, there are always 12 jurors.
For felony criminal cases a unanimous decision is required to convict.

The rules are different in civil cases, but you don't care about that.
