Past karma doesn't really control actions. It more, creates situations, which you may have failed in before. "Cause and effect" is an apt definition, since that's all karma is. Each time a series of events comes around again, the individual is completely free to act, react, or ignore, as he or she sees fit. Karma is not good or bad, its more like a chain of events that were put into place before the current life time. As such, it can be set to right when all involved parties are satisfied with the end result, and no one carries forth any malice. In that sense, there is complete, full and free liberty to act in anyway one sees fit.

Simple. The theory of karmas controlling our actions was based only on our ancestors not able to digest that wrongs done , uncontrolled by the soial setups such as the law,go unpunished.

If previous births were to control us now, then in the next births how are we to be punished for the faults we do in this birth as we do it due to the influence of the past?

So, WE R THE ONES COMPLETELY IN CONTROL OF OUR ACTIONS.
