DO NOT FEED THE BABY CEREAL OR OTHER FOOD! The people who say this are misguided and it will NOT help your baby sleep anymore. You can talk to your doctor or read some (up to date) books and they will tell you the same thing. A baby should not have anything but breastmilk (or formula) until 4-6 months unless they suffer from a medical condition. See the end of my answer for some bullet points on this!!!

A six week old baby will not sleep through the night. Sorry, but you will have to deal with the sleep depravation a little while longer. IT WILL GET BETTER!

You can try swaddling the baby as that helped our daugher. Check out 'Happiest Baby on the Block' which is a good book or DVD that shows how to get young babies asleep or at least to stop crying. And when the baby is up in the middle of the night to eat do make it simple and don't stimulate her. I breastfeed and would actually bring my daughter to bed with me at her 1am feeding and she would just stay with me all night. I was able to sleep during her feedings and she often would just fall to sleep. She was used to sleeping close to me after all that time inside!
Once your daughter is a little older you can try 'sleep training'...lots of books out there. I used the Ferber method which is a modified cry it out technique. It worked for us the first night at four months and she now sleeps about 10 hours every night. If your child isn't sleeping thorught the night by 6 months you are doing something wrong or you don't really care if they don't sleep through the night.
Ask for help from hubby, grandparents, friends, etc. if you think you can't do it and really need some help. Sometimes just one night of sleep can make all the difference in the world.

Why shouldn't cereal be put in your baby's bottle?

* It is an old wives' tale that putting cereal in the bottle will help your baby sleep better at night. Babies should not go more than 4-6 hours without being fed because their stomachs are so small.

* Around 4-6 months, your baby will be ready to eat cereal from a spoon. This is a very important learning step for your baby. Putting cereal in a bottle may prevent your baby from learning this new skill.

* Cereal in the bottle can increase the risk of choking because you have to increase the size of the hole in the nipple to allow the cereal through. If too much comes through the nipple, your baby could choke.

* Putting cereal in the bottle may cause you to overfeed your baby.

Are you kidding. Babies need to feed every 2-4 hrs and as for the stupid idea of putting cereal in a bottle forget it. A babies stomach is not ready for this. Not only can it cause pain it can make your child develope allergies. If you arnt able to cope getting up to a baby don't have anymore. I know somneone whos 9 year old hasn't slept through the night yet this is more of a problem than a baby. Mine occasionally slept through the night at 4 months onwards but don't expect it regulary till 12 months. Never give solids before 6 months and sleep in the day when your baby sleeps if you are tired

DO NOT introduce solids to a 6 WEEK old. Solids shouldn't be introduced until around 6 MONTHS of age and cereal should NEVER be given in a bottle unless under the advice of a doc for a baby who has reflux. Introducing solids early can lead to allergies, diabetes, obesity, etc. etc. etc. Giving solids to a baby whose age is still measured in WEEKS is a BAD BAD BAD idea.

I hate to tell you this, but you shouldn't expect a 6 week old to sleep through the night. Your baby is working hard to be sure that she doubles her birthweight by 6 months. She needs to eat frequently. When she wakes and cries for you, she REALLY TRUELY NEEDS you and NEEDS to be fed. If you are nursing, she probably still needs fed every 2-3 hours or so.

6 weeks is also a common growth spurt time so she may feed really frequently for a couple of days. Once she gets past that growth spurt, you may begin to see her develop some recognizeable patterns in feeding and sleeping.

TECHNICALLY 5 hours is considered "sleeping through the night" but personally I wouldn't even really expect a 6 week old to be doing that yet.

Bringing baby into bed with you can help everyone get more sleep, especially for a breastfeeding mom who can just roll over to feed. Be sure to follow safe cosleeping guidelines. (See links below to learn more about what is normal at this age and how to cosleep safely.)

If you want your baby to sleep better at night try and give it a bath when she wakes up and then give her a feed a see if that help a bit and see if that make her sleep for awhile. They say the baby sleep better after a bath and I have done it with a few of my children as they wouldn't settle through the night.

What worked for me was that I would wake my child up ,because you know they sleep all day,and give them a warm bath and feed a little rice cereal mixed with their formula. I would keep them up for as long as I could by playing and talking to them . When they finally went to sleep they would sleep most of the night, usually until 5am. Hard to believe, but my children all slept through the night. I know the full tummy and the warm bath did the trick. My children are now 39,37,33,and 25 and it still works. lol Good luck.

At six weeks of age, your baby shouldn't be sleeping through the night. She'll need to get up (at least a few times) to take her formula/breastfeed, and also to have her diaper changed.

less stimulation at night is the best, i dont know how your handling things right now, but id try to engage my daughter during the day. sing a song during feedings, talking, experiencing. during the night it was ALL business. i wouldnt ignore her, but it was lights out- quiet time at night. she eventually got the hint.

i could just imagine being in the womb for 9 mos. getting rocked to sleep all day while you were being active and being active at night when everything calmed and you were resting. you just need to reverse the habit, that takes time. she may not sleep through the night for years, or it could take weeks. every kid is different.

6 weeks old DON'T sleep through the night, EVER!!
They need to feed every 3 hours and they will let you know when it is time.

It will get better when you introduce solid food. 'Top him/her of' before putting him/her to bed with a bottle of milk with a blended banana. Helps a great deal.

First and foremost see if the babys clothes are loose and of cotton. then next if the baby has been fed well then automatically she will sleep. and the next best thing is to put ur baby on ur lap and slowly and gently rock it to sleep. every baby need touch. so when shes closer to ur she will sleep. once she is fast asleep put soft pillows next to her so that she will feel cosy. cover her in a flannel if its cold other wise just a cotton sheet will do.

Try giving the baby cereal before bedtime. This worked for my children and grandchildren. Mix the baby cereal with formula or breast milk. Don't make it too thick.
