I hate it when people talk about Christmas and commercialism. It's pathetic. As if we're not swamped by commercialism the rest of the time. Turn on your g0ddamn TVs. Look at the advertising on the internet. Open your eyes and see what the Western world is driven by. You get nothing for free, you're a pawn in a mass network working and buying to pacify and articulate your sorry little self with product.
One of the few things capitalism was able to make money from when it tried to assimilate Christianity was Christmas, as well as Easter. Capitalism saw no profit in the rest of Christianity so its wasted away leaving our oh so profitable holidays.
I agree that it now feels hollow because its just an exercise in our greed, which capitalism loves to indulge. It's more exciting for the marketing and sales people than it is for anyone else.

I'm not too keen on Christmas, I think it lost its true meaning ages ago & now its become a time of plenty mainly for the shopkeepers! If Christmas was say in July I dont think it would have the same appeal as it does when its cold & dark in December. Its just too much hype for a couple of days & the people who go out food/drink shopping the day before you'd think a siege had been declared .... they have to have one of everything on the shelves & one spare ! Maybe if we did exactly the opposite to what most of us do & instead of buying gifts for each other & eating /drinking till we cant stand but instead gave just a token gift of a small value & 'fasted' for a day then we might realise what some people have to accept as normal everyday and then we may appreciate it more

I think you may be in the minority as far as abolishing Christmas goes.
However, if we could do away with some of the stuff- like decorating stores in Sept for Christmas, or starting to play Christmas carols in early October, I'm with you.
I think Christmas is way too commercialized and materialistic. A more simplistic holiday is o.k. with me.

I hate what Christmas has become, but in its essence, it is a time when I am particularly joyous. I deplore the fact that Christmas starts late October in the US, because by the time 12/25 comes along, people get sick of it. I think it has been stretched. I have seen Halloween specials out last week! That drives me nuts! This being said, I love how Christmas makes me feel...minus the consumerism!

Oh yes, you and Uncle Scrooge are in the minority. From small children to retailers to grandparents to the Salvation Army - everyone loves Christmas! You can't even escape. If you travel from Santo Domingo to Tokyo, you will find everybody around the world celebrating Christmas. From prisons to detox centers, they are celebrating Christmas.
Perhaps you can retire to your closet, under a blanket with a case of Mars bars to escape the season.

I don't much care for it either. We only decorate and have gifts for the kids. If I had no kids, I would not be doing anything at all for it. I hate shopping, hate the crowds, cannot stand Christmas music that starts a month before it should, hate hearing Merry Christmas from everyone that passes you. They don't say " Have a nice Monday, Tuesday" any other time.
Bleh.. yeah, I'm a scrooge.
My husband is even worse than me.

I know a few people that hate the holidays ,their hate is based on several different ways of thinking. One hates because he is lonely he has no family and few friends so it is a miserable time for him,he cant or wont come to our home for the holidays as he deems them family time. please note that the holidays are very stressful to a lot of people. Expectations are higher, the fear of not fulfilling theses expectations and the fear of rejection .Depression runs rampant with some and suicide or thoughts of suicide increase during the holidays.
Some people decry the loss of what they feel is the true meaning of Christmas, and its commercialization,so there are many that agree with you .
I enjoy the entire thing ,the preparation, the anticipation, the joy of seeing pleasure on my families and friends faces and the fact that our country becomes a little friendlier a little kinder and more generous to strangers and that brings joy in my heart.

I don't hate Christmas, I hate what it has become. But, I know that I have made it what it is for my family. When I was a kid, my mother went out of her way to make Christmas special for us kids. We always got presents, no matter how much money they had. I listen to stories from my husband about his childhood when all he got for Christmas was a basket of fruit and that was because the local church donated that. I have made Christmas in our home about the presents and taken the "Christ" out. There is nothing more that I love about Christmas than going to church and watching the children sing. It's so spiritual to watch all these innocent young faces singing about Jesus's birthday. These children aren't trying to pay bills and buy presents for their children, children at school whose names were drawn, and in some instances, people at work whose name was drawn. We always opt out of that when possible. I do hate crowds. I do hate shopping. And I do hate cooking. But, I love watching my children get excited over a baby doll or a toy truck. There has to be a better way though. I work with a lady who is a Christian and she doesn't celebrate Christmas. Of course, she doesn't have children either! Gee, Watch for a new question.

The Spirit of Xmas lives in all of us; try Goose instead of Turkey, make a magic mushroom soup for the starter but don't tell anyone what's in it, buy a shot gun for your dad, suggest a game of hide and seek and then quietly sneak out to your car and drive to a safe house, we'll catch up with the rest of the days events watching ABC.
So buy me a present, fellate me under the mistletoe and tell me when you think the book will be ready.
