In today's society people have a lot of insecurities. When people have insecurities they tend to want to find fault in others.

It's annoying because it makes the question harder to read. If someone is asking others to answer their question, they should at least have the courtesy to re-read quickly to make sure it's clear. It just seems so half-assed. It's like people don't have time to even bother - they just expect others to make up for their laziness. One or two typos are fine. Lazy typing is not.
Are people really in such a hurry that they can't take a second to make sure they don't come out looking like jackasses?

Depends on the person. Some people find it grating to hear or see something mispelled or spoken. It usually takes effort to master a language, they see the reverse as laziness.
Another reason, as in the case of a parent or a teacher, might be to help the person. As you've noticed, people make assumptions about you based on your spelling and literacy. Correcting your mistakes can also be an attempt to help you put your best foot forward.

Well, if the sentence is basically unable to be read then I can understand. If you continue to let people get away with improper grammar then they will never learn. A typo or two is fine though.

One typo is forgiveable, but numerous typos which make understanding a stretch...is what you see too much of here.

Depends on the typo. It becomes irritating when you can't understand what people are saying.
I also find chat shorthand to be annoying. What did you go to school for if you can't write?

because they were treated harshly themselves by many many uptight ******* and now they want to get even? because everyone's an f-ing high school English teacher? every one of my college profs took the time to correct every grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors (and took off points) - all except the English professors. Isn't that strange?

Because spell checker is available and free and more than that some times the spelling is so bad you can't read, let alone, understand what's being asked or commented on.
