There are two kinds of 'normal' clarinets in use in classical music, A and B-flat. A instruments are normally used for key signatures with sharps in them; B-flat instruments, for key signatures with flats. I think that non-classical music normally uses the B-flat version.

At any rate, you need to transpose the notation it up a major second for a B-flat instrument, up a minor third for an A instrument. So, if you want a B-flat instrument to sound C major, you have to notate in D major; for an A instrument, you'd notate in E-flat.

A clarinet is B flat, so if the piece you've written is in C major, you'll need to transpose it down a whole key.
