Basically you dont have to go for a specific brand name. The brands you have mentioned inyour qestion are all good and are making robust, compact and fully loaded machines.
The thing you should look is what laptop offers you the best options in minimum budget. Even if you have the most expensive one and dont take care of it, it will get out of order, so its better to go for more features with lesser expenses.
What you should look for is: -
Centrino mobile technology.
size of screen.
Does it have built in LAN, Wireless LAN, Fax Modem and Bluetooth.
Does it have slots for SD/ MS/ MMC/ SM/ XD memory cards?
What is the processor speed.
HD and Memory is important but you can have it replaced with better ones later on.
Does it have DVD RW CD ROM?
What is the battery endurance.
Keeping in view all these aspects, take a survey and look for the best one.
Though I dont say you must buy one but I am now using an HP Pavilion dv4000 machine and it has really worked better than my vio and dell machines I have used in the past.
