I think for some it really is a death wish. But for most, they started because it was thought "cool," "adult," etc. Then they got addicted. And people who smoke tell them it's so HARD to quit.
Actually, it is NOT that hard to quit. You have to be clear that you want to quit. Then you have to throw away your remaining supply. Don't resolve that you will quit "once you run out," because that is not taking the harm seriously. Also, having thrown away a pack or two (I threw away nearly half a carton), you will feel like a fool to start buying them again. And don't give them to someone else who smokes, unless it is your worst enemy.
Resolve yourself that you are not "trying to quit," you already HAVE quit; what you are trying to do is get used to being a non-smoker. The only time I had trouble, really, was when I was sitting at a table across from a friend who smoked the same brand I used to (Marlboro), and he set the pack and lighter on the table between us. I picked up the pack, took one out, and was reaching for the lighter when he said, "Hey, I thought you quit." It had been an action so completely habitual that I didn't even notice what I was doing. I had literally "forgotten" that I was a non-smoker, and that they were his cigarettes!
After about a week or two, you have broken the habit. The only catch is, during that time you may cough more, not less, than you did when you were smoking. Your lungs are using that cough reflex to clean out your lungs. But once they are clean, you can smell and taste again, and people don't have to feel like they are licking the bottom of an ashtray to kiss you!

Nicotine is a very powerful drug that affects the pleasure centers of the brain. After a stressful day, a cigarette makes people feel good and relaxed. The good temporary feelings given by nicotine out weighs the future dangers of smoking. A terrible job boss can cause many to start smoking, as a way to cope.

Addiction. I hate it when people say just stop, when they have never been addicted to anything...whether it's smoking, gambling, drugs or even shopping (hey I read an article and shopping damaged their life by racking up debt and it destroyed their marriage.) So yea, unless you have been though something, don't preach. I'm not necessarily writing this to the person who posted this question but to everyone out there who feels it's necessary to preach.

Some people think it's cool, peer pressure, then addiction. Smoking's is hard to quit because it forms a mental and physical addiction. Mental because your brain is always telling you that you need it, and physical, because if you don't smoke it, your body just won't feel the same way.

Deep down inside they are sad and don't want to live much longer, they know it can kill them yet they continue to smoke, it is a way for them to commit a slow agonizing and painful suicide, at the same time smoking is socially excepted by most people.

Why do people drive cars when they know they can be killed in the blink of an eye? Why do people skydive when they know the parachute may not work? Why do people have unprotected sex when they KNOW they can get aids? why why why. Because I want to smoke, same as everyone else with everything they do.

Smoking DOES make you look cool and grown-up. Smokers ARE the bravest people - they put their lives on the line everyday just to pay more taxes, how many non-smokers can say the same.
.... and the drugs don't work, they just make you worse ....

Most people start smoking to begin with, to feel older, or because they feel stressed, and eventually they become addictied, and just don't have the ability to stop

the habit overtakes their discretion when they smoke--they ruminate over what they have done till they smoke the next cigarette
only because theyare slaves to the habit--a ruthless will to stop is the only medicine
