My cat is a mouser constantly bringing back presents that he has caught but would rats be okay near him?

You can if you're careful!

My rats are in a tightly enclosed cage with multiple cage clasps that keep the bottom of the cage attached to the cage itself. I also keep them in my bird room, where if the cats are being pests, I can lock the door. If you're very worried, you can get males, as they get absolutely HUGE. If their size doesn't scare off your mouser, their teeth will. I had three mousers in my home (The rescue has since found a home) and the rats did fine. All it took was one nip on a curious kitty toe and nose. They learned fast that rats can fight back! They now just hover and stare at the rodents, which the rats don't mind. I'd certainly consider a very sturdy cage in case the mouser gets too curious. Also keep the two separated when the rats are out playing. You could also build a special play cage where the cats can watch and the rats can explore in safety.

Good luck! Rats are a hoot to own!

I'm gonna say probably not. You wouldn't want to come home and find your cat sitting there with one in it's mouth. But on the other hand, if you keep the top of the cage covered where the cat can't get to them, they'll probably be okay.
