Visit Glyfada, or spend most of your day there. There's nice beaches there, most are private though, but that guarantees nice beach chairs and cleaner coast. I would suggest going to Asteria beach in Glyfada. I use to spend some time there, and it was amazing. Also try the bougatses in the area. It's a sweet dessert like a cream pie. And with it, have a frappe. You cannot visit Greece and not get addicted to those. People there drink them like water, probably exzplains why they can stay up all night and never sleep :)
Also in Athens, visit Plaka. It is beautiful, and the rest has been covered by someone here already. The museums are very interesting, but dont visit the Acropolis in the afternoon since it is scorching hot. Try early morning.
As for islands, there are many, and it all depends what you're looking for. An island close to Athens would be Elafonisos. It is small, and has some of the nicest beaches (or should I say nicest beach). You can spend 2 days there. If youre looking for something more party-ish, go to Mykonos, Ios or Paros. I perosnally prefer the Ionian islands, but again, I am biased because I'm from there :). If you do go on that side of Greece, you must visit Zakynthos (Zante) for it has a different look then other islands. There is a Venetian style to the architecture, and the beaches are very pretty. There's a beach called Navagio, named after a shipwreck. And there's really cool limestone caves you could visit, and a night life of course.

Lucky You!
Don't worry! When you get there, the energy of Athens will direct you to where your will is! You do not need to think of everything from before! Of course you want to, but I warn you that while there you will change your plans! Athens is such a city that you feel like home and thus while there you are wiser and decide in a simple and pleasant way! While in Athens, enjoy!
Of course there are some "must" places, which of course you will find easily, while there!
Acropolis, Agora, Theseum, Archaeological and other Museums, Plaka, areas by the sea, Lycabetus, enjoy food in the centre and by the beach!
Also, excellent are the one day trips (if you want to extend these trips to more, that could even be better - it depends on your time, budget, will, etc.)
Islands in the Saronic Bay, Olympia, Delphi, Sounion, Chalkis, ...
You will enjoy every moment, I live here and I know!

In Athens, go on top of Lycabettus hill (there is a funicular railway) for a great view and dinner at the cafe.
Of course the Acropolis, the Agora, the theatre of Dionysos and a walk in Plaka. You can visit all these sites at the same time, with a single ticket.
Museums: the archaeological museum is great, but also you can visit the Benaki museum, the Byzantine museum and the Cycladic art museum. All three are nearby and you can do that on the same moring.
A nice excursion to the island of Aegina is great. Boats leave every hour from Piraeus. There, you can swim, see a picturesque island and visit the temple of Afaia.
If you have a few days left do go to one of the islands. Sifnos, Naxos, Syros, Mykonos are some of the best, perhaps crowded in August.
Also, Kolonaki is a nice sofisticated area for shopping and food. Eat everything, souvlaki, salads, european cuisine, greek cuisine, ethnic, whatever, but avoid seafood in Athens. Fresh fish is great on the islands.

YOU HAVE TO GO to some islands !!!
Very close to Athens is Aegina, Agistri, Hydra, Spetses, Serifos, Sifnos, Paros, Mykonos etc ... U can also go to Santorini but it's a littlr bit further...
The hot spot is the "paraliaki" as we say which means the "beachroad" which is full of night clubs. Try some live Greek music it will be an axperience for u (try "paralia club" I think is the No1 hot spot)
Ah! Try to drink the famous coffe "frappe" at a place like "Pisina" it's at Piraeus at "marina zeas" it's also a nice place to visit by the sea. Also there (in Piraeus) we can find many sea food reastaurants I recomend "Jimmy and the fish" or "Delfino"

You don't 'have' to go anywhere. You should do some research and plan on seeing the things that sound interesting to you. If you still can't decide, lots of guide books and web sites have suggested itineraries and such. You could always model your trip off one of them.
A few good sites to check out:
