I wonder if you really mean stop thinking, or just that you want to stop responding to what's going on around you. The world is so full of stimuli. IM , Malls, cell phones, TV, Radio, Music, etc... on and on ad naseum. Of these, I would say that cell phones are the evil of our age. Life wasn't meant to be lived with a cell phone constantly pasted to our ear. If your constantly plugged in, you can't think straight. There's always a buzzing noise inside your head.
I would say the best way to quiet your thoughts would be to start with reduing the external inputs.
The best way to do that is to do the old proverbial Zen on a mountain top. Get away from life from time to time. Concentrate on a leaf. Watch it's movement. Contemplate it's veins. How it collects water and sunlight.

Theres a myriad of ways, pick one

If you have kids, forget about everything I just said, your doomed.

It is possible. But it's impossible for anyone to ever start thinking :). The brain it's not for thinking. The brain just keeps the wind out of our heads :D

Almost. ive done it a couple times but it was during surgery and it involved general anashetic. There were no concous thoughts like the things that normally go on in sentient beings' minds, but there were neurons activating to keep my heart beating and lungs functioning. Do those count as thoughts, or do you only include thoughts that happen within the normal range of human awareness? normal human awareness is quite narrow.
