Sounds like a good idea, I do not have one though -- I am still arachnophobic enough that I sincerely doubt I could have one in my house.

If you are going to get one, make sure you can contain it safely and keep it warm -- I believe that tarantulas come from tropical climates and will not enjoy living in subtropical or colder climates without good heating. That could become costly, but your local pet store should be able to help with insulated aquariums and sun lamps.

I got one to get me over my fears of hem. I told the guy at the pet store that I would never handle it and he helped me select a Cobalt Blue. It is a stunning spider when you can see it, but it is also a burrowing spider and is rarely out where you can see it. It is also a highly aggressive spider (which obviously did not impress me), and will attack anything that comes near it so I have to use bar-b-que tongs to change the water and clean the cage.
Get a terrestrial rather them burrowing or arboreal, and if you are going to buy a more expensive on, make sure it is female. Males live for 1.5 years max after reaching maturity and your cannot tell how old they are when you buy them.

my next door neighbour had one. There incredibly boring creatures. They simply stay in a spot all day, do nothing, and the poor thing takes a month to just shed its old skin, which looks gross. They dont deserve to be in a small tank. Plus they get real threatened if they think ther in danger.
