I am planning a 7 hour road trip in a 1993 Ford Tempo. The car is in good condition, but it's never been driven on a long distance before. What exactly do I need to check to make sure there are no problems along the way?

If your battery is older than 4 years, I'd replace it with a new battery. Also, if your tires are older than 7 or 8 years old, experts say that you should replace them with new tires to be safe. Make sure the tires have the correct amount of cold air pressure, as well as the spare tire. Do you have the car jack and wheel lug wrench in the trunk? You should have all your belts and hoses replaced, including your timing belt if they've never been replaced. You could bring a box of emergency items like 1 gallon of water for the radiator, a quart of oil, and a reflector type warning to place behind your car and a flashlight if you break down at night. Make sure your windshield wipers and all your lights are working properly. Drive the car on your local high speed roads at 70 mph or more to make sure the steering doesn't shake due to tire balance problems or pull left or right, and test the brakes in higher speed stops.

well a big thing you can do is .,. get an oil change ..and tune up.a new air filter is a good thing to get as well..this well all help with gas millage... .second is make sure all your hoses are still good and not getting too warn .. you can do this by just squeezing them a lil bit and seeing if there are any cracks .. splits or anything else that would make you think they are getting weak .
and lastly just go over it and make sure all your fluids are toped off to the right lvls and still good... this should be the best things to do . to help make sure your trip is a safe and fun one...

A checkup by a certified mechanic would be the way to go on this one. It'll cost a few bucks, but having a breakdown along the way will be MUCH more expensive.

Good Luck.

The main thing is get the oil changed before hand, and check your basic fluids.

If it's in good condition just make sure all fluids (oil, tranny, radiatior (while it cold) etc) are full. Make sure the tires are in good shape and properly inflated. Check your spare too!
