Me and some friends have started a metal band called The Molting Bodom Deathsquad #666.
There's five of us. I play guitar and do backup vocals and we've got a vocalist/songwriter, a bassist, a drummer and a keyboardist.
The guy who writes the songs is a really good composer so there's no trouble there.
Our main problem, though, is that we suck. We have good music to play but we can't play it. The problem is that we're penguins so we don't have opposible thumbs and we can't play the instruments. And our voices are really squeeky, none of us can get that metal sound right.

Maybe you have the talent, but don't feel comfortable. Try placing ice cubes everywhere on the stage so you feel like more at your penguin habitat.
As for your voices, get one of those microphones that changes your voice when you talk in it. The audience will never know that that's not really your voice!

Listen dude ... here's a few tips I can toss your way, as an experienced touring musician ...
First off, if you guys can't play the music, then you have to start small and simple. As a fresh local band, your live performance means everything, and you don't want to suck ... Consider changing you musical genre to something you guys are more capable of. Always remember, no matter how frustrating it may be, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!! Next, I'd recomend changing your band name. You have to realize that your name is the first thing people will see, and it has to grab them, as well as represent your group. Once you guys get all the musical difficulties squared away, Myspace is always a great way to promote your band, starting in your local area, and branching from there. I must say, it is the easiest way to create a local fan base.
Being in a band can be very frustrating at times, trust me. It is fighting an uphill battle almost all the time. Have patience, acquire skill, and over time, your guys hard work will pay off.
