polands worst tragedy was thinking that the Germans wont be able to invade them and that they could win against them when the British and french promised to "defend poland" during WWII. what ended up happening? warsaw was reduced to a heap of ruins and many poles killed.

Just a guess, but either when Germany invaded Poland to start WWII, or during WWII when the Germans wiped out the Warsaw Ghetto where they'd isolated the Jews.

It was when they settle down between the Russians and the Germany when the Austrians have left this place in Europe and went southwards to what today is called Österreich/Austria.
