Different species show different external signs. Sexually mature males of almost all turtles – semi-aquatic, aquatic or terrestrial - have relatively long, heavy tails with the anal opening well beyond the end of the plastron. Females have comparatively tiny tails. Males of many of the semi-aquatic map turtles, painted turtles, sliders and cooters have greatly elongated foreclaws that are employed during an aquatic courtship. Males of many terrestrial species and some aquatics have a concavity in the rear of the plastron that helps them retain balance when breeding. Males of a few species have red or bright orange eyes while those of the females are brown to yellow. Differences in shell color may be noted on other species.

On many types of turtles the plastern (the bottom of the shell) is flat on the female and concave (dished in) on the male. This is actually so the male can hold on to her. Also look at where the tail comes out, the female has a larger round or oval opening to let the eggs out than the male who generally has a small opening that may not be round at all. Without going into details that would send you scurrying to a dictionary these are the simplest things to check. You could do a wide search using the type of turtle (common name not the Latin killer) and breeding.

males have longer tails than females (they use it to hold the females in place during mating). males have concave shells on the underside, females are flat. you may not be able to tell in very young turtles but if you have 1 of each you should see the differences.
