Basic Sun Sign horoscopes are indeed crap.

Most people need to understand that you've got twelve other planets that make up your horoscope. You could have a Cancer Sun but have an Aquarius Moon and Gemini Rising and be nothing like the typical Cancer.

Before you decide astrology is total crap I might suggest that you actually learn a little something more about it. Perhaps buy a book (they're not expensive) that lets you do your own complete chart or have someone do one for you.

Astrology is based on mathematical probability (much like the Harris Poll or any other type of research), based on six thousand years of observations.

Example: Your Sun Sign groups you with one out of every 12 people. Add to that your Moon Sign and you've narrowed your characteristics down to one out of every 144 people. You might be surprised to see how accurate a full horoscope really is.

I don't think it's crap. You just don't have to read your horoscope to find out what it says about your sign. Only you-and you alone-can make it happen. You can go outside and take a walk and not stay at home. I'm shy too. Astrology doesn't always have to make sense to you or me, but to other people, sure. Sometimes my horoscope for Gemini is right on the money. Other times it's not. Don't believe the hype, and the writing on the wall. Don't believe what you read.

This reminds me of Weird Al's song "Your Horoscope For Today"

"Now you may find it inconceivable or at the very least a bit unlikely
that the relative position of the planets and the stars could have
a special deep significance or meaning that exclusively applies to only you,
but let me give you my assurance that these forcasts and predictions
are all based on solid, scientific, documented evidence, so you would have
to be some kind of moron not to realize that every single one of the is absolutely true.

Where was I?"

and it goes on. No, I do not think that astrology makes any sense.

Astrology is a primitive way to explain the unexplainable. The very idea that 6 billion humans will have one of only 12 personalities is ridiculous in the extreme.

I took private astrology lessons as a teen and became very good at casting a horoscope before I realized that the entire system was flawed and useless.

PurpleFerret:

Doctor Watson is correct.

You are more than just your Sun sign. You have a Moon and all the rest of the planets. You have an Ascendant (mask, approach to the world) and a Midheaven (reputation, status). Don't forget the planets are placed in signs and then in houses and aspects between those planets are calculated. All this and much, much more must be looked at and interpreted.

If your Sun happens to be in your 12th house it can be "hidden". If it is in an aspect to Saturn it can be "limited" in some manner.

The 4th house governs the home. Maybe you have Capricorn on the cusp or Saturn in there. They could be reasons why you don't like to be at home. They can limit.

Your entire Natal Chart (based on date, place and time) must be looked at to determine why you feel you lack Cancer attributes.

-------

Don't not judge Astrology by Sun sign horoscopes.

Astrology is by far more accurate than newspaper or online Sun sign columns. Astrology has been around for 5000 years, since the days of Babylonia and extensively studied. It would not still be in wide use around the globe by many different cultures, Chinese and Vedic to name some, if it didn't have merit.

Astrology uses your birth information: date, place and exact time to erect a natal chart, a map of the sky at your exact moment of birth.

The Ascendant and Midheaven are calculated based on your birth data and rule the 1st house cusp and 10th house cusps respectively. The Ascendant governs your self-expression, your personality and appearance. It is your mask and your approach to the world, ie. your package. The MC or Midheaven governs your ambition, status, reputation and community standing. It is very public.

The Sun rules your inner self and personality.
The Moon rules your emotions and nurturing urge.
Mercury rules your intellect, reasoning ability and your communication skills.
Venus rules love, affection and the need to socialize
Mars rules energy and aggression.
Jupiter rules expansion.
Saturn rules limits and structure.
Uranus rules sudden change and freedom.
Neptune rules intuition and the need to escape.
Pluto rules tranformation.

1st house - you, personality, the body, the appearance, health, beginnings
2nd house - money, possessions, values, self worth
3rd house - communications, brothers & sisters, short trips, conscious mind
4th house - the mother or the nurturing parent, home, family, security, latter part of life, private
5th house - love affairs, children, creativity, sports, speculations, romance, love that you give
6th house - work, health, daily habits, small animals
7th house - partnerships, business and marriage, open enemies
8th house - other people's money, sex, death, support from others, taxes, inheritance, regeneration
9th house - higher education, long distance travel. religion, the law, your ideals, in-laws
10th house - career, the father (or mother), reputation, fame, status
11th house - friends, hopes, wishes, goals, love received, circumstances beyond your control
12th house - subconscious mind, institutions, hidden strength, limitations, sorrows, hidden enemies, large animals, self-undoing

All 12 signs are contained in every person's chart.

The 8 planets and two luminaries (Sun & Moon) are placed in the signs and then placed in the 12 houses.

The mathematical relationships between the planets and points (Asc & MC) are then calculated: conjunctions (0°), oppositions (180°), squares (90°), trines (120°) and sextiles (60°) are the main ones.

Things to look for:

Chart shapes: bundle, fan, bucket, splay, locomotive, see-saw, splash etc.
Aspect patterns: grand trines, grand crosses, yods, t-squares, kites, mystic rectangles etc.
Hemisphere emphasis: southern or northern, eastern or western
Quadrant emphasis: 1, 2, 3, or 4
the elements: fire, earth, air and water
the qualities: cardinal, fixed, mutable
the houses: angular, succedent and cadent
most elevated planet
Most and least aspected planets
Mutual reception
where is the chart ruler
any stelliums
lunar nodes
the vertex
Chiron
intercepted signs and/or planets
linked houses
cusp rulers
cusp rules in houses

All that information above derived from just your DATE, PLACE and TIME of birth can be interpreted accurately by a well trained Astrologer.

It's not so simple, and in fact it is very complicated. And it definitely involves a lot more than just your Sun sign.

you have to find the right information about your sign. most zodiac stuff you'll find is complete crap, but if you get a good book, you'll find it's almost completely true about you as a person.
However, being a cancer myself, i know that you're always going to battle those books anyway, since we're the most diverse sign of the zodiac. one moment we're calm, the next we fly off the handle. our slogan is "I feel" we change a lot, and everything is dependant on our moods. so one day you can look at the zodiac and think "hm, i'm shy, quiet and reserved...yeah thats me." the next day you're bouncing around and read the same thing and say "hecknoi'mhyperloudandcrazy!!!"
welcome to being a cancer, lol.
something else that determines your personality, is your moon sign. see, your sun sign is what everyone knows. your moon sign is what no one seems to know about. for example, i'm a cancer with an aquarius moon, which means one day i'm shy and reserved, the next i'm the most outgoing person you've ever met.

Maybe you identify more with your moon sign--- more astrology for you to read! haha! there are sites that tell you your moon sign it's based on the day you were born and some other stuff.

i don't like reading horoscopes because it doesn't ever work out, but i like reading about the personalities of different signs and which ones are compatible and stuff. it's just fun.

Horoscopes are basically just a generalization of a whole. Not everyone fits their horoscope, and certainly not all horoscopes are even true. They are really just guides to help you understand how and why your life is taking the twists and turns it does, and how to cope with them.

I'm a cancer too, July 16 like Will Ferrell and Corey Feldman. I say your horoscope says " Your questions will not be answered today."

I have found that the interesting things about horoscopes is that you should read them a day after they are posted. They are in the entertainment section for a reason.
