If so, do you think it's possible for people like this to ever truly be happy.

Is anyone ever truly happy? The only way that we can be is if we have an appreciation of what we have and don't know about what we lack.

I think it's possible to get on a treadmill of spending and there will always be more to buy and more things that come into fashion. There are also people (I've met many) who buy to feel good or so they can be measured next to others in terms of possession, but obviously a 'thing' cannot make you feel good, despite what the advertisers say.

At the moment I am actually getting rid of things and I find the opposite is true. the more I get rid of, the happier I feel. I feel light, free and less stressed, also my mind feels clearer and I am more efficient. I find that things have a tendancy to own you as well as you owning them. Think about going on holiday - you don't use that much, you live your life...

Absolutely. If you had a valley of gold you would want another one. And the people like this can never be happy. Because being happy is actually making yourself happy. That totally depends on you. And if you keep yourself dissatisfied like that (always wanting more than you have) you'll be unhappy.

It is true that the more you have your standards go up.
And the more you have, the less you can see the simple joy of life, the beauty of a sincere smile from a child or the beauty of a butterfly leaning on a flower.
Happiness comes differently for everyone of us, so they can be happy if money means true happiness for them.

Marilyn,
It is the normal tendency of most of us. But there are exceptions. Those who are eager to earn more and more cannot reach a stage of happiness in their life. So - to be happy what policy I keep in my life is - live within my means and no one can take away what is for me. It will reach me only. Even during the days of hardships I could stay with that principle.

Some people may not believe this but, if you can't find happiness within you will never find it with material things, people you love, or the miracles that affect us on a day to day basis.

i believe that everybody has that certain "something" that they want in their life......this goal, that thing that keeps them motivated and keeps them going. if someone has everything then there is really nothing that they strive for and they just have this hole inside that they have to fill.
most of the time they fill this hole with drugs, women/men, or even cheating on their woman/man, and whatever it may be.
