Do you have the symbol of a speaker in the lower right corner of the task bar near the clock? If you do, right click and open Volume Control. If all you see is the one volume slider click on Options..Properties and make sure Wave and Midi have a check next to them. Click OK and you should have sliders for both. Make sure they are up a ways and not muted.

Double click the little speaker by your computers clock (the short way) to open the audio properties. Check to see if the mute box on any of the controls is checked. If it is, uncheck it and save settings.

Go to start>settings>control panel>system>hardware>device manager. Under the heading sound, video, and game controllers, right-click on any item that has an exclamation mark, 'X', or question mark and use the troubleshooter to help you.

If there are none, close all windows and try to re-install your sound drivers using start>settings>control panel>add hardware.

speakers are turned on means there pluged in awsome. ok, so since you have checked and made sure its in the right audio port and made sure theres no faulty wireing, then lets jump to software issues, have you updated the drivers lately?? are you using windows 98 or windows NT? they have issues with there IRQ settings since your audio is on the same IRQ 5 as it is your NIC, might wanna check into that... thats all from me, best of luck on fixing your problem
